The strategy involved in beating Omaha poker isn't very complicated. If you know the rules and strategies for Texas Hold'em, you have the necessary base to play this game and you shouldn't have much of a problem applying what you have learned. The big exception that makes the game of Omaha poker a more challenging one is that more cards are used. Instead of two hole cards, each player is dealt four. This, of course, results in more possibilities and better overall hand combinations.
So, what are some Omaha poker strategy tips that I can offer you? Well, first of all, it depends on which game exactly you are playing - Omaha High or Omaha Hi-Lo. Below are a few tips for each of the two main variations of Omaha poker.
Omaha Poker Strategy Tips
- Keep in mind that you have to use three of the five community cards and two of your four hole cards.
- Because there are 9 cards in total to create a hand (5 community cards and 4 hole cards), the stakes just got higher. Keep in mind that with this many cards, flushes and straights are quite common; so, if the stakes are high, make sure you justify playing your hand.
- Forget low cards. You are looking to make high hands only.
Omaha Poker Hi-Lo Strategy Tips
To increase your chances of winning, use the following Omaha Poker strategy tips when playing HI-LO:
- Keep on the lookout for high and low hands. This is a HI-LO split game and can get very confusing with the number of options available in each hand.
- A low pair is more of a disadvantage than anything else because your chances of getting a good low hand. This, of course decreases your chance of winning good money.
- If your hand is not a certain winner and will probably have to split with the low after the flop is laid out, fold and get out of the game early on, without having wagered too much.
- Don't rush it. Take it slow and really think over your raises, especially early on in the game; early raises are very risky unless you are holding a good set of cards and know you can't loose (which is a very rare situation).
- Keep in mind that suited flops can make a complete flush. You want to raise the stakes only if you are holding the nut in that suit or if you have trips or two pair that can fill up.
